Power to the People: Apis Energy Technologies Joins Rev

Apis Energy Technologies, founded in 2023 by MIT graduate brothers Ricardo and Edgar Puga y Vidals, is looking to revolutionize the world of power. Their mission is to “reduce electric costs for residential consumers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and improve the overall stability of electric grids”. To do this, they are developing wattsOn, a telemetering system which accurately measures power demand, and igNite, which works to optimize electricity consumption and send power to where it’s needed most. With eyes on fast-growing markets in the U.S. and Europe, Apis hopes to bring reliable power to the millions who currently go without.

What is the “origin story” behind your company?

Apis was born from a crisis. In 2016, I was advising the Puerto Rican government during its power meltdown — hospitals losing electricity, families throwing out spoiled food, and people paying prices that felt like extortion. Protests erupted, and the grid helped topple the government. What struck me most was how powerless people felt — they had no say, no control, and no way to respond.
That kind of dysfunction stays with you. And for me, it never left.
Years later, during COVID, my brother Edgar and I started asking the question no one else was asking: What if the grid actually worked with the people it served? That idea became Apis.
We’re building a platform, right here in New York, that connects people directly to the electric grid — so they can access cheaper electricity, help balance the system, and finally have a role in their own energy future.

What customer need is your company attempting to address?

Most people have no control over their electricity — they don’t know when it’s cheapest, who supplies it, or how to lower their bills. Meanwhile, electricity retailers (ESCOs) struggle to reach customers efficiently, and the grid needs electric use to be more flexible to handle renewables.
Apis addresses all three problems by giving consumers a simple way to save money and participate in the grid — and giving retailers and utilities a better way to engage, coordinate, and compete.
We’re meeting the need for transparency, control, and smarter energy use — all in one app.

Do you have any recent company milestones or accomplishments you would like to share?

We’ve been laying the groundwork — refining our product design, validating the core use cases, and starting to execute. We’ve also brought on a few strategic advisors to help us think clearly about implementation, trust-building, and how to scale in a system as complex as the grid. Most of our energy right now is focused on getting the product right — and making sure it’s something people will love.

Where do you envision your company a year from now?

In one year, we hope to have our first cohort of users on the platform, actively participating in the energy system — saving money, shifting behavior, and proving the value of a more connected grid.
In five years, we see Apis as the layer that makes the grid more human — a place where millions of people log in, coordinate, and shape how energy flows.
