Capro-X, is a sustainable ag-tech startup, spun out of Cornell, with labs located in downtown Ithaca. We are focused on scaling up our WheyAway fermentation technology, which upcycles dairy wastewater streams into clean water and green alternatives to unsustainable palm oil chemicals. Today, Capro-X is focused on treating acid whey, a problematic byproduct from Greek yogurt production. We currently have a pilot system installed at a local Greek yogurt plant, and are planning to scale 20x with a demonstration scale system later this year. We’re largely grant funded, and have also won key pitch competitions in the ag-tech space to fuel our growth (FoodBytes! by Rabobank and Grow-NY).

 

Job description & requirements

Capro-X is searching for an Controls Engineer Intern to join our growing team in Ithaca, NY immediately (Spring semester), and in the summer of 2020. The intern will be joining at an exciting time for the company, as we plan to deploy a large-scale fermentation system at a Greek yogurt plant in NY, and continue accomplishing innovative R&D at the bench-scale.

The intern will be responsible for assisting our team both in the lab and in the field by assisting with bench-scale bioreactor operations; and then to specify, design, construct, and commission controls systems for the bench and demonstration scale. Our ideal candidate will have hands-on independent experience with electronics with examples of controls-related projects they have accomplished; comfortable with power and manufacturing tools; clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Learn current Capro-X bioprocess control scheme
  • Specify, design, construct, and commission controls for the bench and demonstration scale
  • Specify controls equipment for small projects (Arduino, Raspberry Pi) and for industrial applications (National Instruments, Labview)
  • Commission controls equipment, tie into real-world bioreactor systems

 

Qualifications

  • Experience with designing and manufacturing AC/DC systems
  • Detailed engineering design and documentation for electrical controls (sensors, power supply) (BOD, PFD,P&ID, BOM, 2D/3D renderings)
  • Experience with the National Instruments platform controlling typical fermentation I/Os (pH, temperature, flow, pumps, heat)
  • “Anything is possible” approach to work
  • Able to learn on your own, seek out knowledge
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team
  • Highly familiar with LabView, MS Office

 

Education and experience level

  • Seeking BS or MS in a relevant engineering or science field (for example: electrical, mechanical, environmental, chemical, etc.) OR graduated within past year with these credentials
  • Work and academic experience are preferred (previous internship, consulting, independent research)
  • Experience with construction and manufacturing a plus.

Our ideal candidate will have hands-on and independent wet-lab experience; knowledge of fermentation technologies; experience with power tools and manufacturing; clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask across varying project demands.

Responsibilities

  • Assist R&D team with maintaining bench-scale bioreactor systems, analyze samples (OD, pH, GC, HPLC, COD, BOD, VSS)
  • Aid with demonstration system process design and detailed engineering documents, technical drawings, renderings
  • Construct fermentation components at the bench and demonstration-scale (bioreactors, pumps, piping, control and power systems)
  • Perform maintenance on lab equipment
  • Select process equipment (pumps, heaters, tanks, mixers)

 

Qualifications

  • Experience in wet-lab environment, in particular with a biological and wastewater background
  • Detailed engineering design experience in hydraulics and electrical controls (BOD, PFD, P&ID, BOM, 2D/3D renderings) and professional software (AutoCad, LabView, MS Office)
  • Construction experience with hydraulics and electrical controls (PVC hose and pipe, DC/AC wiring, power and hand tools)
  • Experience with AC/DC wiring, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, PC and networking components
  • “Anything is possible” approach to work.
  • Able to learn on your own, seek out knowledge
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team
