Revolutionizing Crop Protection: Unibaio Joins Rev
Unibaio, founded by Claudia Casalongue, Matias Figliozzi, Florencia Salcedo, Vera Alvarez and Daniela Caprile, is making crop protection effective and sustainable. They have developed microparticles that trap the active ingredients of existing agrochemicals like pesticides and fertilizers, and help them penetrate deeper into plants, reducing the number of applications of agrochemicals by up to 80%.
What is your “origin story”?
Unibaio was born from a shared frustration: the slow pace of change in agricultural sustainability. While studying agrochemicals and nanotechnology, our founders saw a gap – new eco-friendly solutions existed but weren’t being adopted fast enough. Farmers couldn’t afford the risk, and alternatives often lacked performance. We realized the key wasn’t replacing chemicals overnight, but making the ones farmers already use more efficient and safer. That insight led us to develop our biodegradable nano-additives, inspired by nature and designed to supercharge existing products. Unibaio exists to bridge today’s reality with tomorrow’s sustainable farming – starting with what’s already in the tank.
What customer need is your company attempting to address?
Unibaio addresses the need for more effective and sustainable crop protection. Farmers and agrochemical companies face growing pressure to reduce chemical use due to environmental, regulatory, and consumer demands – but without sacrificing yield or performance. Unibaio’s technology helps them meet this challenge by enhancing the absorption and efficacy of existing pesticides and biologicals, allowing for lower doses, fewer residues, and faster adoption of greener practices—all without changing the products farmers already trust.
Do you have any recent company milestones or accomplishments you would like to share?
We recently won first place at Grow-NY, one of the biggest agtech competitions in the U.S., and took home the $1 million prize. Over 400 startups from around the world applied, and Unibaio came out on top. It’s a huge boost for our growth and a strong signal that our tech has global potential. We did it by showing that high-impact science can come straight out of the most unexpected place.
Where do you envision your company a year from now?
One year from now, we see Unibaio closing its first co-development and licensing deals with major agrochemical companies, while also launching TurboCharge™, our first tank-mix product, directly to specialty crop growers in the U.S. It’ll be the moment we go from “promising” to “proven in the market.”
In five years, Unibaio will be a global formulation partner, helping reduce chemical use on millions of hectares across Latin America, the U.S., and Europe. We’ll have a full product line for herbicides, fungicides, and biologicals – built on our mission to make agriculture more effective and radically more sustainable.
