Who we are

Capro-X is a sustainable ag-tech startup using natural fermentation to upcycle food industry byproducts into clean water and green alternatives to unsustainable palm oil chemicals. Today, Capro-X is focused on treating acid whey, a problematic byproduct from Greek yogurt production, and producing biofuels and bioplastics.

R&D Lead – Fermentation

 

Capro-X is searching for a Research and Development (R&D) Lead for Fermentation to join our growing team in Ithaca, NY. The R&D Lead will be joining at an exciting time for the company, as we execute on activities at the bench-scale and optimize performance of a biorefining pilot system installed at a Greek yogurt plant in NY. The R&D Lead will be focused on leading work in the lab to drive new risky research efforts at the bench scale. There are also additional opportunities to gain experience operating a local pilot system. A strong candidate should feel comfortable performing: bench-scale bioreactor sampling and maintenance operations; wastewater-type water quality tests; bioreactor mass and mole flow analysis; construction of bespoke bioreactors, hydraulics, and controls; sample prep and analytics on GC, HPLC, spectrophotometer. Our ideal candidate will have hands-on construction and operation of scale-up fermentation equipment; research experience through the entire operations and analysis scope of fermentation studies; clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask across varying and dynamic project demands.

Your Role

  • Focused on fermentation R&D; work within an interdisciplinary R&D team, operating and analyzing performance of bench-scale bioreactor systems
  • Perform reactor samples analysis (wet lab, enzymatic, GC, HPLC, OD, pH, COD, BOD, VSS)
  • Evaluate reactor performance (conversion efficiency, mass balance, optimization)
  • Perform R&D operations on client-site scale-up systems
  • Assist with grant and project applications
  • Propose and review R&D plans with leadership, outline equipment/space/staff needs
  • Improve lab organization and processes (organization, data analysis, SOPs)
  • Perform maintenance on analytical and bioreactor equipment
  • Construct fermentation components at the bench and pilot-scale (bioreactors, pumps, piping, control and power systems)

What You Bring to the Table

  • Hands-on experience in wet-lab environment, in particular with a fermentation, microbiology, and waste water treatment background
  • Direct research experience developing fermentation or waste water treatment technology, from daily operations to project-wide data analysis; particular value in experience with arrested anaerobic digestion (AAD)
  • Construction and maintenance experience with hydraulics and electricals (pumps, liquid flow, PID controls, DC/AC wiring, power and hand tools)
  • “Anything is possible” approach to work – able to learn on your own, seek out knowledge
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team

Education and Experience Level

  • Seeking experienced PhD in a relevant engineering or science field (for example: biological, chemical, civil, environmental, and mechanical engineering; food science, microbiology, and biology)
  • Work and/or academic research experience are required (thesis-level research, internship, consulting)
  • Experience with design, construction, and operation of large fermentation systems a plus.

Bioprocess Engineer

Capro-X is searching for a Bioprocess Engineer to join our growing team in Ithaca, NY, with an opportunity to onboard with the company immediately. This employee will be joining at an exciting time for the company, as we are in the midst of evaluating a large-scale fermentation system at a Greek yogurt plant, continuing to accomplish innovative R&D at the bench-scale, and evaluating novel green chemicals with customers.

The Bioprocess Engineer will predominantly work in the company labs in Ithaca, performing bench-scale bioreactor operations, wastewater-type samples analyses, analytical chemistry and enzymatic assays, and method development. Our ideal candidate will have hands-on and independent wet-lab experience; knowledge of microbial growth practices; comfort with building pumped water systems, basic AC/DC circuits, and light manufacturing; clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask across varying demands. With relevant experience, there is an added opportunity gain experience operating a large-scale demonstration system.

Your Role

  • Collaborate with R&D team to operate bench-scale bioreactor and chemical extraction systems.
  • Analyze samples (OD, pH, COD, BOD, VSS) and system observations to identify performance issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Develop experimental approaches through ideation, design, construction, and analysis phases.

Qualifications

  • Experience in wet-lab environment, in particular with a fermentation or wastewater background.
  • Experience with operating and analyzing biological and chemical systems in batch and continuous mode.
  • Construction experience with hydraulics, and basic manufacturing (NPT/socket/barb/Swage, power and hand tools).
  • Experience with AC/DC wiring, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, PC and networking components, basic coding.
  • Goal oriented and able to work independently.
  • Able to learn skills on your own, seek out knowledge.
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly.

Education and Experience Level

  • BS / MS in a relevant engineering or science field (for example: biological, environmental, chemical, mechanical; microbiology, food science) OR graduated recently with these credentials.
  • Industry and academic experience are heavily preferred (previous internship or position, independent research).
