Fermentation Research Intern


Location: Downtown Ithaca, NY.
Employment type: Paid internship. Full-time during the Summer, potential to continue through Fall semester.
Experience: Students currently seeking a BS or MS in engineering or science (i.e. chemical, environmental, biological, civil, food science, microbiology) OR graduated with a BS, MS, or PhD within past year with these credentials.

 

Capro-X background


Capro-X is a sustainable ag-tech startup using natural fermentation to upcycle food industry byproducts into clean
clean water and green alternatives to unsustainable palm oil chemicals. Today, Capro-X is focused on treating acid whey, a problematic byproduct from Greek yogurt production, and producing biofuels and bioplastics. We were recently awarded NSF and EPA SBIR Phase 1 and 2 grants – and have also won key pitch competitions in the agtech space to fuel our growth (FoodBytes! by Rabobank and Grow-NY) – and are searching for interns who are excited about improving the sustainability of the food and ag space.

 

Job description & requirements


Capro-X is searching for a Fermentation Research Intern to join our growing team in Ithaca, NY immediately for the
Summer of 2021 semester, and ideally onwards through the Fall semester. The intern will be joining at an exciting time for the company, as we are in the midst of evaluating a large-scale fermentation system at a Greek yogurt plant, and continuing to accomplish innovative R&D at the bench-scale.


The intern will predominantly work in the company labs in Ithaca, performing bench-scale bioreactor operations, wastewater-type samples analysis, analytical chemistry and enzymatic assays, and method development. Our ideal candidate will have hands-on and independent wet-lab experience; knowledge of microbial growth practices;
experience with hydraulic design; clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask across varying
project demands. In this fast-growing startup, the intern will gain first-hand experience in a challenging and dynamic environment – we

Responsibilities

  • Assist R&D team with operating bench-scale bioreactor and chemical extraction systems, analyze samples
    (OD, pH, COD, BOD, VSS).
  • Perform maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Develop experimental approaches through ideation, design, construction, and analysis phases.
    Qualifications
  • Experience in wet-lab environment, in particular with a biological and wastewater background.
  • Experience with operating biological and chemical systems.
  • Construction experience with hydraulics and electrical controls (NPT/socket/barb/Swage, DC/AC wiring, power and hand tools).
  • Experience with AC/DC wiring, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, PC and networking components, basic coding.
  • Able to learn on your own, seek out knowledge.
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly.
    Education and experience level
  • Student seeking BS / MS / PhD in a relevant engineering or science field (for example: biological,
    environmental, chemical, mechanical; microbiology, food science) OR graduated recently with these credentials.
  • Work and academic experience are preferred (previous internship, consulting, independent research).

Controls Engineer Intern

Employment type: Paid internship. Full-time (40 hrs / wk) for 2021 summer, potential to continue through Fall semester.
Experience: Students currently seeking BS or MS in engineering or related field OR recent graduates within the previous year.


Job description & requirements:

Capro-X is searching for a Controls Engineer Intern to join our growing team in Ithaca, NY immediately for the
summer of 2021, and ideally onwards through the Fall semester. The intern will be joining at an exciting time for the company, as we plan to deploy a large-scale fermentation system at a Greek yogurt plant in NY, and continue accomplishing innovative R&D at the bench-scale. The intern will be responsible for assisting our team both in the lab and in the field by assisting with updating bioreactor control systems; to design custom experimental devices; and to specify, design, construct, andcommission controls systems for new pilot systems.

 

Our ideal candidate will have independent and/or direct experience with microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc) for sensing and controls, wiring for power distribution, comfortable with power and manufacturing tools, clear and effective communication skills; and an ability to multitask. In this fast-growing startup, the intern will gain first-hand experience in a challenging and dynamic environment – we strive to provide broad experiences that come with joining a growing startup and to find new potential hires who have a multidisciplinary background, a “get it done” attitude, and share our ambition to bring greater sustainability to the

Responsibilities:

  • Learn current Capro-X bioprocess control scheme.
  • Specify, design, construct, and commission control systems for the bench and demonstration scale.
  • Specify equipment for custom experimental projects (Arduino, Raspberry Pi) and for industrial applications (National Instruments, Labview).
  • Basic power distribution, relay control design and wiring.
  • Commission controls equipment, tie into real-world bioreactor systems.

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with designing and manufacturing AC/DC systems.
  • Detailed engineering design and documentation for electrical controls (sensors, power supply) (BOD, PFD,
    P&ID, BOM, 2D/3D renderings).
  • Experience with AC/DC wiring, basic power controls devices, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, PC and networking components.
  • Able to learn on your own, seek out knowledge.
  • Strong writing and presenting skills to communicate with team.
  • Highly familiar with AutoCAD, MS Office.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly.


Education and experience level:

  • Seeking BS or MS in a relevant engineering or science field (for example: electrical, mechanical, environmental, chemical, etc.) OR graduated within past year with these credentials
  • Work and academic experience are preferred (previous internship, consulting, independent research)
  • Experience with construction and manufacturing a plus.
